Alex Bastani attended public school in northern Virginia since kindergarten and graduated from T.C. Williams high school in Alexandria where he earned his letter as a member of the football team. He graduated Boston University as a double major in Economics and Political Science. He worked as an Economist with the United States Department of Labor while attending George Mason University School of Law in the evening and passed the Virginia State Bar on his first try in 1994. He served the federal government for thirty-four years and once worked part-time as the coach of Yorktown High School’s Freshman Boys Crew team in Arlington.
A retired president of federal union local, and an Attorney, whose duties included arbitration representation, negotiations, training of legal interns, federal lobbying, press relations, recruitment, and managing a non-profit with an annual budget of half a million dollars a year.
He led a successful campaign against privatizing 300 jobs performed by federal employees at the United States Department of Labor during the George W. Bush administration.
During his eleven and half years in office, he doubled the union local's cash reserves from 130,000 dollars to 285,000 dollars. He also took the lead reducing an arbitration backlog from 220 cases to 12 cases from January 2014 to September 30, 2017. Finally, he was on a record pace on membership improvement from 990 in February of 2017 to 1135 as of September 30, 2017. This 14.5 percent membership increase in just the last seven (7) months of his term of office more than quintupled the national membership growth rate of 2.5 percent.
